Truck Driver Arrested After Causing Multiple Vehicle Accident in Salinas

A multiple vehicle accident occurred in Salinas on September 19, 2012, at approximately 7:45 a.m. The incident was caused by a big-rig truck driver failing to slow down in time to avoid a line of cars that were stopped. The big-rig truck slammed into a Nissan Maxima pushing into a field adjacent to the roadway. The big-rig truck then struck a Toyota Corolla which was pushed into a utility truck. The driver of the big-rig truck has been identified as Rodrick Woolridge of Atwater, California.

Following the accident, Woolridge was arrested by California Highway Patrol Officers on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and booked into Monterey County Jail. The victim drivers of the Corolla and the Maxima were both transported to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital with undisclosed injuries. This unfortunate accident exemplifies the dangers associated with inattentive or intoxicated big-rig drivers. Big-rig trucks are massive vehicles that pose risks to all pedestrians and motorists when they are not operated by responsible and attentive drivers.

The federal government has enacted a comprehensive licensing system to help ensure that only responsible drivers are allowed to operate big-rig trucks. Under the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act a state may only issue a commercial truck driver license to a driver that meets certain standards. A driver who has been previously convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol may be disqualified from driving a big-rig truck. An employer who fails to ensure that all of its drivers have valid commercial truck driver licenses can be held liable for any injuries and damages caused by its drivers.
