Yosemite Bus Crash Leaves Sixteen People Injured

On April 13, 2013, around 6:00 p.m., a tour bus heading south on a mountainous stretch of Highway 41 was leaving Yosemite National Park when it crashed and injured sixteen people. The tour bus had fifteen passengers, a tour guide, and a driver on board at the time of the crash. The passengers were said to be a group of tourists from the Bay Area.

Officials say the bus driver lost control of the bus while driving on Highway 41. The bus driver was operating the bus at an unsafe speed when he lost control and drove over an embankment. The bus eventually came to rest after crashing into a tree. A California Highway Patrol spokesperson said the violent impact of the crash had caused passengers to be thrown to the opposite side of the bus. The accident left all fifteen passengers and the tour guide injured, while the driver was unscathed. A California Highway Patrol spokesperson said if the tree not been there the bus would have continued down the ravine.

Most of the passengers on the bus were elderly tourists that suffered moderate injuries. The passengers were transported to three local hospitals where they received treatment. Some passengers were taken to Community Regional Medical Center and Clovis Community Medical Center. According to published reports, all but one victim has been released from Community Regional Medical Center. The conditions of the rest of the victims remain unknown.

The bus is owned by Seven Happiness Tour & Charter, a company based out of Burlingame, California. The driver Changefeng Liu, has reportedly worked with the company for six years.

The bus has been impounded and will be inspected to identify any mechanical failure that may have contributed to the accident. Mechanical failures are a common cause of bus accidents. Bus companies often overlook necessary maintenance to increase their profits.
