Party Bus Crash Leaves One Woman Dead and Nine Injured on Highway 101 in Redwood City

On Sunday, May 26, 2013, a woman was killed and nine others were injured after a party bus ran into a car that was stopped on Highway 101 in Redwood City.

The woman killed was 36-year-old Sara Klein who is the wife of 43-year-old Raul Padilla and a well-known burlesque dancer. Sara Klein was known in the burlesque community under her stage name "Sparkly Devil". Padilla was driving the red Honda coupe that is said to have slammed into a center divider on Highway 101 South before coming to a stop facing oncoming traffic. The Honda was stopped, when the party bus hit the Honda, leaving eight of the eighteen bus passengers with injuries and the driver of the Honda in critical condition.

There were two other vehicles involved, but none of the passengers were injured. Highway 101 South was shut down for two hours after the crash for investigation. The crash occurred just a few miles away from the San Mateo Bridge where five women were killed in a limousine fire just three weeks earlier. The party bus was towed to an impound yard.

This tragic accident displays several common causes of vehicle accidents in California. While the exact cause of the accident remains to be determined, there is a possibility that distracted driving, or negligent driving was a factor. Too often drivers are inattentive while one the road, or distracted by something in the car, which can range from cell phones to a passenger in the vehicle. A driver that caused an accident due to their inattentive or negligent behavior can be held liable for the accident. A victim of distracted driving could be entitled to compensation for a variety of things, including but not limited to, medical bills, lost wages, future medical costs, pain and suffering.
