Big-Rig Truck Causes Massive Pileup in Siskiyou County

On December 18, 2012, a freighting trucking accident shut down Interstate 5 for nearly twelve hours. The massive accident occurred just north of Yreka, California. According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident started at approximately 6:30 p.m. when the driver of a big-rig truck lost control and struck a concrete barrier. The initial accident resulted in a chain reaction which left a path of destruction in its wake.

As many as sixty vehicles, including up to five big-rig trucks, were involved in the series of crashes that followed. The line of vehicles involved in the massive accident reportedly stretched for nearly a mile. The northbound side of Interstate 5 was littered with disabled vehicles and the southbound side was shut down to allow access for emergency vehicles to respond to the scene.
Preliminary reports indicate that eight people were transported to local hospitals with serious injuries. At The Matiasic Firm, our thoughts are with the victims in hopes that they make a complete and speedy recovery.
This accident highlights the destructive potential of trucking accidents. An out-of-control big-rig can result in major injuries. In an effort to help lessen the dangers associated with commercial trucking, government officials have enacted a comprehensive system of trucking regulations. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which oversees the trucking industry, has enacted regulations related to all aspects of the commercial trucking including: truck inspection requirements, driver training, hours-of-service limitations, and driver disqualification. A trucking company can be held liable for the negligence of its drivers if it fails to comport with any of these regulations.
