San Leandro Big-Rig Truck Accident Leaves Two Victims with Serious Injuries

A preventable trucking accident left an East Bay toddler and his grandmother with severe injuries. The accident occurred on March 20, 2013, around 10:15 p.m. on northbound Interstate 880 in the vicinity of Oracle Arena and the Coliseum in San Leandro, California.

A California Highway Patrol spokesperson has indicated that the accident was precipitated by a sideshow which shut down several lanes of traffic on I-880. A sideshow is an illegal and reckless stunt involving drivers who shut down traffic and perform various maneuvers with their vehicles including spinning out-of-control and burning rubber. According to published reports, Jasmine Glenn was driving her Chevrolet Impala with her mother and two-year-old son when she got stuck in the traffic jam that resulted from the sideshow. A white big-rig truck was traveling northbound and failed to slow down as the stopped traffic backed up. The truck slammed into the rear of Ms. Glenn’s Chevy Impala.
Ms. Glenn’s two-year-old son Corey suffered severe injuries as a result of this collision. He was rushed to an area hospital and surprisingly later released. Additionally, Ms. Glenn’s mother was treated for undisclosed injuries. After Corey’s release, Ms. Glenn grew increasingly concerned when his condition did not improve. She later took him to Kaiser Hospital in Oakland. Kaiser doctors diagnosed Corey as having suffered a fracture in his neck requiring major surgery. At The Matiasic Firm, our thoughts and prayers are with Corey and his Grandmother in hopes that they make a speedy and complete recovery.
While the sideshow participants share some liability because of their reckless behavior, the driver of the truck and potentially his employer can also be held liable for the terrible injuries and other damages sustained by the victims.
