Big Rig Chain-Reaction Crash in Pomona Results in One Death and Multiple Injuries

On August 19th at around 8:00 PM two collisions occurred on the eastbound 10 Freeway in Pomona near Towne Avenue. These collisions, which occurred approximately a minute apart, involved a total of eight vehicles including one big rig truck. The tragic accident claimed the life of one unidentified male victim and left several other victims with major injuries.

The initial collision involved three cars. Approximately a minute later, a second collision occurred between a big rig truck and four other cars. The big rig truck was marked with lettering that indicated that it was owned by the shipping company Maersk Inc.

The second collision trapped a BMW 325i under the Maersk big rig truck. After striking a center divider, the big rig and the BMW were both engulfed in flames. The driver of the 1987 BMW, Gerardo Yanez, as well as passenger, Cesar Navarro, were both able to escape the vehicle. Mr. Yanez and Mr. Navarro were transported to the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center with severe injuries. Tragically, the second passenger in the BMW was unable to escape from the burning car and died on the scene. At The Matiasic Firm, our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims and their families.

Given the complexity of the accident, California Highway Patrol investigators have not yet disclosed the cause of the accident. It is still unknown whether the malfunction of equipment or driver negligence caused this devastating accident. It is critical that a comprehensive trucking accident investigation is initiated immediately to protect the interests of the victims and to identify all potential sources of liability.

A 1990 BMW 325i, was also involved in the second collision. The driver, Edgar Henriquez, his wife Patricia Henriquez and two teenagers sustained injuries. Mr. and Mrs. Henriquez, of Van Nuys, California, were reported to be in critical condition and were flown from the scene to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center, while the two teenagers were taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Ismael Escarcega, the driver of a 2013 Honda Accord, also sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.
