Oregon Tour Bus Accident Leaves Nine Dead

A tragic tour bus accident occurred on December 30, 2012. According to published reports, the bus was traveling on Interstate 84 along the Blue Mountains in a rural part of eastern Oregon when it plowed through a guardrail and tumbled down a steep hill.
Rescue workers responded to the scene and descended the hill to help pull the victims out of the bus wreckage. There were reportedly at least forty people on board when the bus crashed. Twenty-six victims were transported to St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton for treatment and four other victims were transported to Oregon Health and Science University Hospital in Portland.
Tragically, nine victims suffered fatal injuries as a result of this devastating accident. Authorities identified 57-year-old Dale William Osborn of Spanaway, Washington as one of the victims. His wife, Darlene Sue Osborn, was also on the bus and is receiving treatment at St. Anthony Hospital.
There were many Korean nationals and people of Korean descent among the victims. Authorities have identified several Korean victims including: Oun Hong Jung, Joong Wha Kim, and Youmin Kim. The Korean consulate in Seattle, Washington has sent a team including Vice Consul Chul Ho Choi to work with the investigators and assist with communications with the victims and their families. The private tour bus that was involved in this heart-wrenching accident is owned by Vancouver based company Mi Joo Tour and Travel. According to preliminary reports, the bus was en route to Vancouver from Las Vegas when the tragic accident occurred.
A team consisting of state and local authorities and inspectors from the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of this tragic bus accident. Hazardous road conditions may have played a role in this shocking accident. Dangerous intersections, defects in roads, steep shoulder drop offs, and improperly maintained guardrails are some common hazardous road conditions that can lead to fatal and severe bus accidents. State and local governmental entities can be held liable if they fail to keep the roadways free of hazardous conditions.
At this early stage in the investigation, it is unclear if driver negligence contributed to this bus accident.
