Fifteen People Injured after a Streetcar Collided with a MUNI Bus on Market Street in San Francisco

On Wednesday, June 12, 2013, an F-Line trolley traveling on Market Street in San Francisco hit a 9L-San Bruno MUNI bus at a bus stop near the intersection of 6th Street and Market Street.

The 9L MUNI bus was stopped when the F-line trolley rear-ended the back of the bus. A pedestrian crossing Market at Seventh Street saw the frightening crash and observed passengers that were physically thrown from their seats from the force of the impact. Witnesses also observed terrified children streaming out of the bus.

The crash resulted in injuries to fifteen victims, including seven children. Many of the victims were rushed to area hospitals, including San Francisco General Hospital, to receive treatment. Thais Schwab, a camp counselor for the Vision Academy Day Camp, said she was on the 9L MUNI bus with a group of 31 children on their way to a field trip to the Historic Cable Car Museum when the accident occurred.

Following the accident, a group of children sat on the sidewalk holding ice packs to their heads, while bystanders comforted the children who were involved in the accident. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. According to protocol, the operators involved will be screened for drugs and alcohol to determine if driver intoxication had any role in the accident.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency serves a large number of passengers in San Francisco and often is involved in accidents. Market Street is especially dangerous in the Mid-Market area near Union Square where the street is frequently congested with vehicles, buses, trolleys, bicyclists and pedestrians. Due to this congestion, it is especially dangerous when drivers or public transportation operators are distracted or negligent. When drivers of public transportation are not attentive, severe injuries can occur due to the sheer size and weight of the vehicles. Those individuals and entities responsible for any negligence that resulted in you or a loved one's injuries must be held accountable.

At The Matiasic Firm, we would like to wish a speedy recovery to the victims who were injured in the collision. Our dedicated lawyers have over 30 years of combined legal experience and are highly skilled in representing victims who have been injured in bus accidents. Many times victims will be offered an inadequate settlement from the insurance company and are unaware of the full compensation that they may be able to obtain. Our attorneys can help you obtain the compensation you deserve.

The investigation of public transportation accidents must be pursued quickly because if your case is not filed within the statute of limitations, you could lose your rights to seek justice and fair compensation. For injuries stemming from accidents involving public buses that are owned and operated by a city, state, or federal government entity, a tort claim must be filed within six months of the date of the accident. If you or a loved one has been injured while riding a bus, contact the bus accident attorneys of The Matiasic Firm for a free consultation.
