San Francisco Teenager Kevin San Killed and Five Others Injured in Tragic Accident

On Friday September 27, 2013, at approximately 6:55 a.m., a woman who was recklessly driving at speeds in excess of 80 mph on San Francisco city streets crashed into a minivan and a catering van killing a teenager and injuring five others.

The accident occurred in San Francisco's Western Addition neighborhood at the intersection of Pine and Gough Streets. The driver of the silver Mercedes SUV sped through multiple stoplights on Pine Street before smashing into a minivan that was stopped at a red light. A catering truck with three occupants was subsequently struck by the out-of-control Mercedes SUV.

The minivan was carrying a mother and her teenage son and daughter. Tragically, the 16- year-old male passenger of the minivan was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has since been identified as Kevin San of San Francisco. Kevin San, a junior at Abraham Lincoln High School, was on his way to school when this terrible accident occurred. Kevin San will be missed by friends and classmates who gathered at the intersection of Pine and Gough Streets on Sunday to honor his memory. The loss of a loved one in a senseless accident is a tragedy that no family should be forced to endure. At The Matiasic Firm, our thoughts and prayers are with the San family in their time of unimaginable grief.

Kevin San's mother and sister suffered severe injuries as a result of this avoidable accident. Additionally, the three occupants of the catering van also suffered undisclosed injuries. All the injured victims were immediately transported from the scene of the accident to a local hospital for treatment. At The Matiasic Firm, we wish all the victims a complete and speedy recovery.

Police have identified the driver of the Mercedes SUV as 58-year-old Jennie Zhu. Ms. Zhu has been arrested for vehicular manslaughter and also charged with numerous vehicle code violations. Although it remains unclear as to what compelled Ms. Zhu to put lives in danger by driving recklessly, it is clear that her excessive speed and disregard for traffic safety laws caused this terrible accident and the resulting heartache and pain.
